The Sermon on the Mount isn’t just a list of things Jesus tells us to do. It reveals who He is and what He’s like.
In Luke 24, Jesus walked His disciples through the Scriptures and showed them the things concerning Himself. What if we read the Sermon on the Mount the same way – looking for the character of Jesus instead of asking, “What does this demand of me?” As we see Jesus for who He really is, we begin to become like Him.
This week, we’re practicing meditating on the Sermon on the Mount and looking for Jesus in it. Meditation is simply thinking deeply about deep things. So find a quiet time and place where you can be alone with Jesus to walk through the steps below. Don’t rush this – only begin when you have 15 minutes to slow down, think deeply, and be present with Him.
Look through the outline below, and ask the Holy Spirit to highlight at least three specific topics for you to meditate on. If you have time, do as many as you can
Read the section of the Sermon on the Mount for your topics, and think with God about what you’re reading. Ask, “What does this show me about who Jesus is and what He’s like?” Write down what you notice.
Talk with Jesus about what He revealed to you, then share that with someone else. A great way to connect with other people doing this same practice is by finding this week’s practice plan post on social media and sharing your revelation in the comments!
