Forsaken. As Jesus was punished for the sins of the world, he prepared for the most agonizing experience imaginable – separation from his heavenly father. His cry from the cross must have shaken the universe to its core: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt.27:46). For the Son to know that the Father has turned away and forsaken him must have been the worst pain imaginable – for them both. God the Son had taken upon himself all the sins of humanity, literally becoming sin itself. God the Father in his justice, had to fully punish sin and turn away from it. The price was horrific pain and separation for Father and Son. The result was forgiveness and freedom for all who trust in His saving work! Something significant in the moment of his suffering – Jesus quoted a verse of Scripture. Psalm 22:1 was the passage Jesus quoted in the intense atmosphere of suffering and abandonment. The Psalms in particular are intended to be a prayer book for God’s people. There is the gamut of emotions expressed in the Psalms. Find a few passages meaningful for you and store them in your heart for the days ahead when you will need them most. “Psalm prayers” help to keep you connected with God’s purposes, even when it feels like everything around you is failing. Remember that because of the sufferings and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God will never forsake you. He is there. Has there been a particular Psalm that has become especially meaningful for you?
